Tesla Reports Record Quarterly Revenue of 32 Billion Dollars as Robotaxi Service Launches in 10 US Cities

Tesla reported record quarterly revenue of 32.1 billion dollars for Q2 2026 on September 2, 2026, driven by the commercial launch of its autonomous robotaxi service across 10 major US cities.
## Robotaxi Service Drives Record Financial Performance
CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the robotaxi fleet now comprises 25,000 vehicles operating in Austin, Houston, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Dallas. The robotaxi service generated 4.8 billion dollars in revenue during its first full quarter, with 89 million rides completed.
"The robotaxi business has exceeded every projection we made," Musk said during the earnings call. "At current growth rates, autonomous ride-hailing will become Tesla largest revenue segment by Q4 2027."
Tesla automotive gross margin improved to 24.3 percent, up from 18.7 percent a year earlier, as the company reduced production costs through its new gigafactory in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The facility, which opened in March 2026, produces 400,000 vehicles annually at a per-unit cost 22 percent lower than the Fremont, California factory.
## Production and Expansion Plans
Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja reported that Tesla delivered 582,000 vehicles globally in Q2 2026, a 31 percent increase from the same quarter last year. The Model Y remained the company best-selling vehicle with 264,000 units delivered, while the refreshed Model 3 accounted for 178,000 deliveries. The Cybertruck contributed 67,000 units, surpassing analyst expectations of 52,000.
Tesla energy storage division reported 6.2 billion dollars in revenue, with Megapack installations increasing 78 percent year-on-year to 12.4 gigawatt-hours deployed globally. CFO Taneja noted that energy storage gross margins reached 28.1 percent, driven by strong demand from utility customers in California, Texas, and Australia.
The company announced plans to expand the robotaxi service to 25 additional cities by mid-2027, including international markets in the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates. Tesla has submitted regulatory applications in all three countries, with UK approval expected by March 2027.
## Technology and Regulatory Milestones
Tesla Full Self-Driving software achieved Level 4 autonomy certification from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for operation in designated urban zones. The certification allows completely driverless operation in geofenced areas, a milestone that rival Waymo achieved in 2024.
"We have completed 1.2 billion miles of autonomous driving data collection," said Andrej Karpathy, Tesla senior director of AI. "This dataset represents the largest autonomous driving training corpus in history, giving us a fundamental advantage in edge-case handling."
Musk projected that the robotaxi fleet would reach 100,000 vehicles by the end of 2027, with each vehicle generating an estimated 80,000 dollars in annual revenue. At that scale, the robotaxi segment alone could produce 8 billion dollars in annual revenue with gross margins exceeding 45 percent, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas.
Tesla shares rose 8.4 percent in after-hours trading to 312 dollars per share, valuing the company at 980 billion dollars.
Tesla also announced a partnership with Uber Technologies to integrate the robotaxi fleet into the Uber app, providing riders with access to autonomous vehicles in all 10 launch cities. The partnership is expected to generate an additional 1.2 billion dollars in annual revenue for Tesla through ride-sharing platform fees.
